He displays here an ability to take a simple premise, tell a simple story in it, yet structure its narrative in such a unique and rather complex way that its powerful simplicity gains a level of beauty that is not often seen in film.

An aging actress that reminisces about her career because she is being interviewed, with around her the studios that she worked….

Brilliant, surrealist visual poetry concerning the unique way in which fictional narratives have the power to immerse an audience; just as the interviewer and the cameraman find themselves quite literally absorbed into Chiyoko's own life narrative, we are absorbed into the one that Kon has so expertly crafted for us.

In a sense, the film parallels itself you can certainly tell that this is from the same genius who later brought us Paprika , and that's something that very few films have the inventiveness or intricacy to achieve.

Review by Adam Friedland 2. I had just finished stuffing away my laundry and shoveling down my lunch so I could be on time to watch it with friends on Discord.

I got to experience the movie with a fresh set of eyes, and see how others reacted to the crazy tricks that the film pulls off in pursuit of its story.

I fell in love with the music and the style in a way I had failed to click with before, and I understood, further, the historical and cultural allusions that are at the heart of this film; I'm not certain they need to be known for the story to work its magic, but it….

Review by Matthew B. I love its history and all its depth and breadth. I am driven by a desire to see everything, despite an understanding that there will always be something more to see.

Satoshi Kon is just letting his own love for the history of Japanese film run all the way through this one. But even then, it's also beautiful to see how his love of art works to create a story that weaves through the memories we cling onto the most.

In Millennium Actress , we're watching the life of Chiyoko Fujiwara as it spans many films that take place within many eras, but we're also seeing fragments of her youth as they also explore what it is that her work over the years has meant to her.

It's also framed as a documentary being made about her life, with the filmmakers even intruding in on events where they never were present, but….

When a documentary filmmaker interviews an actress that mysteriously disappeared during the height of her career the actress goes through a menagerie of flashbacks and memories, revealing important things about life.

I loved almost everything about this immersive and frenetic experience. Satoshi Kon understands pressure to perform and many of the structural factors that impact people, women more specifically, as they are forming and attempting to live up to public identities.

The film has a lot to say about pressure and regret but it's not just a reflective piece. There is a lot that Kon does to keep the film moving at a good pace and heading toward a goal.

Set with the Japanese film industry as a backdrop, 'Millennium Actress' is an incredible voyage through memory and time.

A Greta Garbo-like actress has her wonder years behind her and she becomes part of a documentary on a bankrupted film studio.

As she's given a key by the journalist her past is triggered and slowly Satoshi Kon blends different portions of substance together in this superbly animated film.

After 'Perfect Blue' this too has a lot of clear context, but it also manages to make you go and find meaning in what the writer intended.

Hard to fathom at times, but astonishing to look at. I didn't know what good editing looks like until I saw this movie. It says the runtime is 90 minutes but it feels more like The more grounded and personal of the Satoshi Kon films.

Loved the transitions that drew a line between reality and fiction. The music added an extra feeling of somber and beautifulness to this experience.

Como muestra el cine y el punto de vista que le da, hace que pensar. It was fine. Lots to like. Different art styles, some fun, some touching.

I liked the concept, some great visuals. But not really that deep. Like, I was moved but not as much as I'd have liked.

I think the comedy, while serving a purpose, killed some of the feeling for me. Essential movies for lonely people out there like me if you want to feel something in this big big world.

Following the release of Satoshi Kon's previous film Perfect Blue , Kon considered adapting the Yasutaka Tsutsui novel Paprika into his next film.

However, these plans were stalled when the distribution company for Perfect Blue , Rex Entertainment, went bankrupt.

When producing Millennium Actress , Kon created a unique combination of both his memories and his imagination, striving to make Millennium Actress and Perfect Blue two different interpretations of the same concept; a story told from two different perspectives.

His intention was to have the two films as sister films. Some have speculated that both films engage with the feminist concept of the male gaze.

It is seen not as a sequence of events unfolding in real time, but rather in a retrospective, lighthearted point of view.

This is the last major animated film created with hand-inked cels, as most animated films at the time started to use digital ink-and-paint or computer animation.

The story of the film is done in the style of a "play within a play. As Genya talks with Chiyoko, we see the story of her life from her teenage years to being a middle aged superstar.

The flashbacks that appear are interspersed with segments from Chiyoko's films. While Chiyoko's life takes place surrounding World War II, the characters in her films span from the Sengoku period to a futuristic space age.

One of the big elements of the story has to do with a dissident artist that Chiyoko helped to escape from the military.

She became attracted to him, but he had to flee. However, he left behind a key to his suitcase, and Chiyoko wants to find him.

She initially became an actress in order to have the opportunities to travel and to try to find him. Over the course of the story, we learn that Genya was actually part of Chiyoko's past, although she doesn't realize it right at first.

The execution of the story is very well-done, although there are a lot of layers to the storytelling.

You really have to watch it more than once in order to pick up on details that you may have missed the first time you watch it.
